Aseptic Loosening and Dislocation

REVISION OF TOTAL HIP PROSTHESIS

ASEPTIC LOOSENING OF TOTAL HIP PROSTHESIS

  • Currently, the implants we use for total hip replacement approximately survive for 20-25 years.
  • The implants we have used is determined depending on age, quality of bone, and Daily living of activity of patient.
  • For the young age, we generally prefer to use sementless acetabular and femoral implants.
  • Moreover patient who is under 50, we can prefer implants with hydroxyapatite coated
  • There is an insert between acetabular and femoral head.
  • Femoral head and insert could be prefered as a combination of ceramic on ceramic or ceramic on HXPE
  • Although hip replacement surgery has been done perfectly, wearing between surfaces could be occured with time. This result in loosening between bone and implant. We call aseptic loosening for this situation.
  • Another issue is that dislocation could be rarely become due to aseptic loosening or technical problem.
  • We sometimes observe infection in the hip joint and we call septic loosening.
  • We need to replace implants either totaly or partially when we diagnose aseptic, septic loosening or dislocation.
