Today, the use of total endoprosthesis surgery in both hip and knee arthritis is increasing, as it allows our patients to both relieve pain and regain their daily activities. This method is applied to one million patients a year in the United States and about one hundred thousand patients a year in our country, and very satisfactory results are obtained. However, its widespread use brings along important problems in these patients, both in the early period (infection) and in the late period (loosening of the prosthesis), and requires the replacement of the prosthesis, which we call “revision surgery“. However, these surgeries are usually much more difficult than the first surgery and sometimes require different solutions.
For example this patient which hip prosthesis was performed 13 years ago; in addition to loosening of the hip prosthesis, arthritis of knee left him dependent to wheelchair and he was having difficulties while doing his daily activities. We performed a single step operation with a very different technique to eliminate both hip and knee problems for our patient to make him get out of wheelchair and be able to walk independently again.
