Revision of Total Hip Prosthesis

The joint surfaces that make up the total hip replacement can be metal, polyethylene, or ceramic. These implants wear over time due to the friction that occurs during movement. With the body’s response to metal and plastic parts which are too small to be seen and produced by abrasion, the prosthesis can be loosened and separated. Nowadays with appropriate surgical techniques and modern prosthetic designs, total hip prosthesis lasts 20-25 years. Loose prostheses can be removed with a second surgery and placed again in most patients, but the second prosthesis does not last as long as the first prosthesis.

Apart from the reasons mentioned above, complications such as infection, dislocation of the prosthesis, dislocation of some parts of the prosthesis, fractures around the prosthesis, fractures in the prosthesis itself may occur, and revision surgery can be performed depending on these reasons.

Patient 1: Our revision surgery in the patient whose prosthesis broke 2 years after the first operation

Patient 2: Our revision in the patient whose prosthesis loosened after 12 years from the first operation

Patient 3: Our treatment in our young patient who underwent revision 1 year after the first surgery due to bone erosion of the prosthesis.
