What is Deformity Surgery?

Abnormal bowing of bone in different shapes are called “deformity”. These deformities can occur in 4 different ways (angulation, rotation, translation and shortening) or all of them together. In orthopedic science, the whole of the procedures performed for the surgical correction of these deformities is called “Deformity Surgery”. While some deformities can be treated at the moment (acute) with one-time operation, some deformities are corrected gradually with advanced surgical instruments and fixation devices. In some cases, the deformity is corrected by directing or manipulating the body’s own growth potential.

Treatments in deformity surgery; After the bone cutting process (osteotomy), acute or gradual correction is made to the limb. Then fixation is made with locking plates, intramedullary nail or external fixation devices (fixators). Sometimes treatments are applied with single device, sometimes in combination (combined).

You can see the deformity correction applications we have made with different techniques in our patients.

Patient 1: Correction of the curvature of the patient with genu valgum deformity with the Ilizarov device

Patient 2: Acute correction of the bowing of the patient with genu varum deformity by FAN method

Patient 3: Pre- and postoperative view of the right leg of the patient with severe curvature in both legs

Patient 4: In our patient with achondroplasia, we both corrected the curvature of the legs and lengthened the tibia by 6 cm. Pre- and post-operative images of our patient
